Travelling to World Horror Convention
Non-Canadians please be aware that there are ATMs in the airport, and most Bank cards will work in them. Check the back of your card for the following symbols: PLUS or INTERAC. If they show there, you are fine, but they usually only give out $20.00 bills. However you will want exact change to use the city bus (the bus driver’s ticketbox will accept US coin at par)  At the Airport, there are food kiosks and gift shops up on the upper level, but only one outlet on the main level – A Tim Hortons Coffee Shop. There is a hotel across from the North end airport entrance, and they may be willing to exchange a small amount of cash for you. If you have travelers cheques in US funds, you may be able to buy a coffee at the Tim Horton’s on the Main level and get Canadian change that way too.

Currency – Pennies (1cent), Nickels (5 cents), Dimes (10 cents), Quarters (25 cents), $1 & $2 are all coins. Everything else  ($5, $10, $20, $50) etc. are all paper bills. Most places will accept US$ bills and give a reasonable exchange rate, but usually accept coin at par only.

Our conference site: The Marlborough Hotel - see the map.

For those of you who are flying to the WHC ~
(US members will probably clear through Canada customs here in Winnipeg, and when you go home you will probably clear through US Customs here also, so allow a bit of extra time when leaving.)  The airport has almost finished its renovations, and should not be a major inconvenience to you. When you have collected your luggage, you can walk outside at either end of the airport, and catch a taxi which can take you to the Marlborough Hotel at Smith St. between Portage Ave. and Ellice Avenue. A cab ride should be roughly $25 to $30 CDN, and take twenty to twenty-five minutes. Or if you feel like you want to see a wee bit more of the city, you can catch a #15 city bus, no transfer required (only one bus runs into the airport, but you can’t miss the pumpkin orange city buses), for $2.30 CDN at the South end of the airport, in the center median. This bus will get you within a block of the hotel. Ask the driver to let you off on Portage Avenue just past Smith, and when you get off the bus, go west on Portage Ave. to Smith St, and North ½ block to the Marlborough hotel on Smith. The bus trip will take about 40 to 50 minutes. (These are not very large blocks, so it might take you at most 5 minutes to get there at a reasonable walking pace when you get off the bus including traffic lights.)

For those of you who plan to drive to WHC~
Please be aware that the Red River is in Spring Flood mode at the beginning of April, and that as a result, there may still be some detours on roadways approaching the city of Winnipeg by the end of the month. This may cause detours and time delays. We urge you to check the highway conditions regularly. If you are coming up from the US via North Dakota, check for North Dakota conditions. Also, check Manitoba conditions for Manitoba info on road conditions, directions and border crossing information.

Winnipeg maps, including directions from the airport are available

Downtown streets that go North/South are most often one way streets, so be careful.

By CN/ViaRail Train or Greyhound bus~
Neither the Train Station nor the Greyhound Bus Station are super close to the Convention site, but they are downtown. It could be walked if you feel the need to, but a $2.30 CDN city bus ride of 5 to 10 minutes are available. Ask the bus driver if they are going past Smith St at Portage. It is probably faster than flagging down a taxi.

From the Train station -
Multiple buses stop at the North corner of the Train station, and pretty much every one turns onto Portage Ave and stops near Smith St., so you just need to ensure you are getting on one that goes past the correct intersection. Get off at the Donald St. stop and walk back to Smith (just under 1 block). You should be able to see the hotel from the Portage & Smith intersection. It is a half block North on the East side of Smith St.

From the Bus station -
you need to go out to Portage Avenue, cross to the South side of the street and catch any eastbound bus and ask to be let off at Smith St. (you will cross to the North side of Portage Ave. at Smith.) You should be able to see the hotel from the Portage & Smith intersection. It is a half block North on the East side of Smith St.

To walk from the train station to the hotel
The station entrance is at the intersection of Main St. & Broadway. (Broadway T junctions at Main St.) so go to the crosswalk and cross Main St. to walk west on Broadway, (past Fort and Garry streets) 3 blocks to Smith turn right, 5 ½ blocks to the hotel, crossingYork, St. Mary, Graham and Portage. If you get to Ellice you have gone ½ block too far and somehow missed the hotel walking right past it!

To walk from the Greyhound station to the hotel…
(Please be aware that the bus station is moving from the downtown area, but is not expected to have moved by the time of the convention.) Go to the Portage Avenue entrance. Stay on this same side of Portage, turn left (east) and walk 6 blocks. The streets you will  cross are: Memorial, Carlton, Hargrave, Donald and the next street is Smith. Look left (North) and across Smith, you will see the Marlborough Hotel, halfway up the block. On that walk, you will pass the Bay dept store across the street, at Memorial & Portage, next is the Portage Place shopping mall  (which is 2 blocks long),  the MTS Centre across the street is next and you are almost there.

Bus route info from airport:
15 Sargent/Mountain Schedule
The airport is serviced by the 15 Sargent/Mountain. When buses leave the airport they will be signed 15 Mountain. When they are traveling to the airport they will say 15 Sargent. To find times for the 15 use our Airport Service link and then the route 15 to get times to and from the airport.

Book your hotel room Now to ensure that you get the Convention Rate! Even if you haven’t got your membership yet, that will be okay, as long as you have one when you arrive to check into the hotel. Convention Pre-Registration close April 24th so we have time to prepare the badges etc ahead of time. At Con Registration will be available on site beginning Wednesday (or if you are coming earlier because you are vacationing at the same time, please contact us to make special arrangements.)

The committee would like to remind you of the following:

1- Our Hold on our hotel block will be ending soon, and we don’t want to disappoint anyone who waited too long. The committee will only be setting aside a small contingency of hotel rooms for late comers, so please book NOW.

2- It is best if you book directly with the hotel. Remember that the hotel rate is $95 Canadian so for our American cousins the currency exchange is like an almost 20% discount on your room!! Bookings made prior to March 27th are guaranteed to be in the block IF You Remember to Tell them at the time, that you are with the World Horror Convention. After that point it is important that you also send us a message so we can double check for you and ensure that you are correctly within the block.

3- We ask all persons who have already booked to ensure that they have reserved under the WHC block. If you aren’t certain, let us know and we will check it for you, and let you know within 3 days.

4- All hotel rooms booked within the WHC block benefit the convention itself, so we ask that people keep this in mind when booking.

5- IF you are planning on a ‘party’ activity please let us know in advance! We want to keep the noise levels within reason by putting party folk on the same floor as the Con Suite and we hope you are able to understand why we don’t want to disturb other hotel guests if at all possible. We have some rooms near the Consuite especially for ‘partying’ for you to host such events in, as long as we know about them. So please contact John to ensure we can assist you in setting aside a space.”
