WHC2008 Art Show
Art Show Rules
All artists interested in exhibiting at the 2008 World Horror Convention (WHC2008) Art Show must be juried and approved by the World Horror Society (WHS) Jury Committee.
If you have previously exhibited with a World Horror Convention, you are already juried. If not, you can get information from the FAQ
Art panels and tables.
WHC2008 charges $20 per panel (4' x 4') or table (3'x6') plus a 10% commission on all sales. Your panel is not confirmed until all fees and forms are received and checks have cleared. Do not send cash through the mail (yes, it still happens). Money orders are acceptable. Checks and money orders are to be made out to Utah WHC.
Art panels and tables are sold on a first come, first served basis. If you need to back out of the Art Show, you will only get a refund if we can resell your panel space. WHC2008 has 46 panels available for artists.
Print Shop fees are $5 with a 15% commission.
Subject matter, style, and medium.
Subject matter should be horror or dark SF/F; however, we will not reject art that represents a broader area. Non-traditional media are welcome. If special arrangements are needed for exhibition, please contact the WHC2008 Art Show Director. Please note: the Art Show will be open to the public. No art on display can be anything that would be considered pornographic or indecent. No art should exceed what would generally be considered a “hard R” rating. The WHC2008 Art Show Director will be the final authority on this. (If you have doubts on whether or not a piece can be shown, contact her before sending or bringing the item).
Original work or quality reproductions ready to hang.
All Art Show entries must be original works or quality reproductions of original works. Any works that are suspected of IP/Copyright violation will be pulled.
All 2-D works must be ready-to-hang. This means pieces must be:
- Framed with hanging wire – no generic picture frames or metal frames with saw-tooth hangers. Metal frames with hanging wire are fine. Uni-frames are acceptable with Plexiglas. Framed art without appropriate hangers will not be hung.
- Matted with a backing. It is recommended that if your works are only matted that you encapsulate them in either a clear plastic bag (think comic book collections) or shrink-wrap. Unframed works are hung with bulldog clips, which may cause damage to the matt board. Plastic stick-on hangers allow for better hanging, but are optional. Matted prints are recommended over framed as they are easier and cheaper to ship or bring on a plane. (However, framing originals does make them easier for buyers to identify).
Labeling your work.
Each item must have a label with your name, the title, and Item ID# on it. This is in addition to your bid sheet. List each piece you are sending (and the total number sent) on your control sheet.
The Item ID# is a sequential number plus a letter/s assigned to you by the Art Show Director when you register. (The combination of letter and numbers will be your Item ID#.)
Please make sure the information on your labels corresponds to the information written on your control sheet. We recommend that you keep a copy of the control sheet for your records. WHC2008 is not responsible for lost or mislabeled objects.
If you are an agent or are sending art for more than one artist please complete a Registration Form and Control Sheet for each artist.
Only one copy of any work will be hung in the Art Show.
Preference will be given to the original work, if provided. Reproductions should be signed and numbered. Other copies of any piece shown in the Art Show should not be for sale elsewhere in the convention (except the Print Shop). We recommend that you NOT have the same piece of art in the Art Show and the Print Shop (unless the art in the Art Show is an original and the art in the Print Shop is a copy).
If you have business cards, we can display those with your art. Just remember to leave room in your estimation of space for the holder (about 6"x4").
Prices for artwork should reflect fair market value.
Yes, this only makes sense, but it does bear repeating.
Please use full dollar amounts (no cents). All sales will be in US dollars.
You can choose to list a direct sale price on any art. However, if someone bids on the art, the direct sale option becomes void, and the art will go to the highest bidder at the end of the Art Show. Please have a minimum bid on all items up for sale in the Art Show. Please do not make the minimum bid price close to the direct sale price.
We will not offer an "after auction sale" price other than the direct sale amount provided. Bids will be accepted until the close of the Art Show on Sunday afternoon.
If an object reaches 5 bids, it will go to open auction. (The Art Auction is tentative and scheduled for Sunday afternoon.)
All art sent to WHC2008 will be available for the Art Show or Print Shop. We discourage any artist except for the Artist Guest of Honor from sending work Not for Sale.
We will accept works that are either shipped or hand-carried by the artist.
Mailed-in art must be received by March 20, 2008 (date is tentative). Send art to Robin DeSpain, Mouse Trap Designs, 791 N. 1000 E. Provo, UT 84606.
We recommend that you insure your art when shipping (both ways). We can accept mailed-in art by any shipping company; however, unsold art will be returned to you via USPS, unless you have provided otherwise. The Art Show will be set up on Wednesday night. Some art may be hung on Thursday morning. Please contact Robin if you wish to hang your art on Thursday. Unless prior notification has been received, only the artist or his/her agent may hand-carry and hang art.
If you are attending the convention, you may ship art to the hotel three (3) days prior to the convention start date with prior notification and approval from the hotel rep.
The following information should be included on all packages:
Group name (World Horror Convention)
Hotel Contact: Bonnie Larsen
Meeting Contact: Kammi Davis
Date of Function: March 27-30, 2008
Address of Hotel: Radisson Hotel Salt Lake City Downtown, 215 West South Temple, SLC, Utah 84101
All packages sent to the Radisson will be subject to a $4.00 handling fee per package.
Remember, it can take 3-7 days for art to be shipped within the US, more if shipped from other countries. If you ship your art and don't attend, please provide return postage (insured) for your art. WHC2008 is not responsible for lost, late or misdirected packages.
WHC2008 membership.
Artists and their works are welcome at WHC2008, but please note that the purchase of art panels (or Print Shop entries) does not include a membership to the convention, nor does it include a discount. Please see website for membership information.
Disclaimer. (Yes, you know this, but it covers our bases.)
We reserve the right to reject any work that does not follow these rules.
Art will be returned within two weeks of the convention.
WHC2008 will take every precaution to protect art, but neither WHC2008, the WHC2008 committee and Art Show staff, nor the hotel, are responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen art.
WHC2008 is not responsible for the cost of return shipping; Artists or their agents must provide proper packaging and postage for items they wish returned. If art is not sent with return packing material and postage, we will endeavor to contact the artist. But, if the artist does not send money or reply within four weeks, then any unclaimed art will be considered a donation to the WHC2008 charity.
WHC2008 will make reasonable efforts to return objects in the packaging they were received in. If packaging is deemed unsafe for return, WHC2008 will make reasonable efforts to contact the artist/agent to arrange alternatives. If items were received without packaging, WHC2008 is not responsible for providing packaging. WHC2008 and its staff are not liable for damages to unprotected objects in transit.
