MICHAEL MARSHALL SMITH was born in England in 1965. His early years were spent in the United States, South Africa
and Australia, before his family returned to the UK. He attended school in Chigwell, Essex, and then went to Kings
College, Cambridge, to read Philosophy and Social and Political Science. He was a Committee Member of the Cambridge
Footlights, took part in the National Tour, and after college recorded two comedy series for BBC Radio as a member
of the AND NOW, IN COLOUR team.
He worked for a number of years as an events organizer, graphic designer and corporate video scriptwriter, meanwhile
publishing his first short story –"The Man Who Drew Cats", in DARK VOICES 2: THE PAN BOOK OF HORROR – in 1990. He became a full-time writer in 1995, spurred by a commission to write an eight-hour mini-series adaptation of Clive Barker's novel WEAVEWORLD for the Showtime Network.
Since then he has published six novels and over sixty short stories, while continuing to work intermittently as a screenwriter. He currently lives in North London with his wife, son and two cats.
